Exercises for hot weather

Dear Patrick,

I live in Riverside County where it’s very hot. I have PD, and I want to exercise. What kind of exercise do you recommend in the heat?

Luke Lindberg

Hi Luke,

As I often do, I want to begin my response by strongly recommending that you consult your doctor before embarking on an exercise program. This is especially true for exercise in extreme weather conditions.

I do not recommend exercising in the extreme heat, especially if you have Parkinson’s disease as this can prove to be a stress on the entire body’s systems, cause overheating or dehydration, and can actually exacerbate the symptoms. That being said, here are a few things you can do in the comfort of your air-conditioned home which don’t require a lot of space. All three drills are wonderful for People with Parkinson’s

3 Minute Parkinson’s Exercise & Stretch

This is an excellent way to begin your routine. If you begin to fatigue, cut back on the intensity. During your routine, you can choose to take a break. Stop the video and just relax for a few minutes before resuming.

Chair Stretch for People with Parkinson’s Disease

This chair stretch is one of my favorite  stretches and an ideal progression from the 3 minute stretch.  It activates your Central Nervous System to create a deeper and more effective stretch for the spine. It’s also great for the chest and shoulders and will really open you up.

Chair Cardio for Parkinson’s

Next up is a great time to introduce a cardio segment. Follow the instructions on the video, and once again, cut back if you are tiring.

Be sure not to overdo it, and drink plenty of water. After you completed the cardio routine, you can circle back and do either of the previous stretches to round out this mini program. As I like to say, I’ve seen small changes make big differences! So stay active and I’ll see you at the gym.
